Video job interviews? You bet.
The current pandemic has forced many of us into our homes. It may look as if no one is working, but some companies are nonetheless conducting business as usual. So that means that they are interviewing to fill open positions. And since many of the interviewers are working at home, they are probably expecting to interview you at home.
Many of the guidelines for these interviews will be similar to those you were used to in previous face-to-face interviews. However, there will be some differences that are necessary in video interviews. Let’s look at the specifics you need to keep in mind for video interviews, to make your best impression:
Set up your technology very carefully.
- You’ll need a high quality camera and microphone.
- Familiarize yourself with the video application, such as Skype or Zoom, for example, to be used during the interview. Be sure to test it before the interview to make sure everything functions properly.
- Sit 2-3 feet from a blank wall. If you could have a window as a background, that would be even better.
- Try to sit on a low-backed chair that doesn’t creak.
- If you’re using a laptop, elevate it to eye level even if you have to stack some books under it.
- Look at the camera, not the other picture on the screen.
Dress professionally, top-to-bottom, as you would for an in-person interview.
- Solid, neutral colors are best.
Be sure there are no distractions like pets or crying children.
- Turn off your cell phone so it won’t ring in the middle of the interview.
- Close multiple tabs or windows so you can focus only on your online interview.
As you would for a face-to-face interview, be sure to research the company and the position.
- Looking at the Linked in profile of the prospective interviewer would also be good preparation.
- Review the questions you expect to be asked (write Judi at jlansky@lanskycareerconsultants.com for a list of commonly asked questions). You could also schedule a practice interview with her.
