Now that it’s Fall, you may be turning more attention to your career. Is it moving along in a way that’s satisfying to you and on the road to success, or are you concerned about the direction it’s taking?
Maybe you’ve been looking for a new position and haven’t experienced much success yet in your search. Perhaps your resume or networking efforts are not yielding many interviews. Maybe you’ve been interviewing but aren’t getting offers. Are you going to keep struggling on your own or with advice from friends, or would you be well advised to hire a Career Coach?
A Career Coach is similar to a coach in any sport. S/he gives advice, training and generally helps you improve your performance. So how would you know if you need – or would benefit – from one?
• Maybe you’re not moving ahead in your company
• Maybe your boss is not pleased with your work
• Perhaps you’re stuck with writing your resume
• Maybe your interviews are not yielding offers
Getting some professional assistance might save you a lot of time and stress. The general advice is to hire someone earlier rather than later. That way, you can benefit from the coach’s expertise and encouragement at the beginning of your search or transition. Very few people enjoy – or are good at – marketing themselves. The Coach can help you build and implement an effective strategy while minimizing the stress of what can be an emotionally charged situation.
How would you find a career Coach? The best way to find a Career Coach – like finding any professional – is by word of mouth. Ask everyone you know whether they have used one or know of one.
Once you’ve identified one or more (more is better), take the time to interview them. You can ask them questions such as:
• How long have you been coaching?
• Do you have particular areas of expertise among your clients?
• What level are most of your clients?
• Are you selective about clients you accept?
• Am I like the majority of your clients?
What are your feelings? Do you feel comfortable with them? Can you see yourself working with them?
