You already use your Smartphone for so many aspects of your business and personal life. Now you can also use it to make your job search easier.
Not in an active job search right now? Use it to build your network so that you’re prepared when you do want or need to look for a job. In his recent article on BusinessInsider.com, “These are the apps you should be using to boost your career,” Nathan McAlone suggests a number of useful career related apps.
These are the ones I find most helpful. (Please note that prices may be subject to change.)
- To survey some of the jobs available in your field, fill out a brief profile on Jobr and then like Tinder’s interface, you can “swipe right” on jobs you’re interested in when you have just a few minutes standing in line for coffee or waiting for the bus. This one is free. (iOS, Android)
- Networking is a very important part of building a career and especially of an effective job search. Collecting and saving business cards is an excellent way to prepare. Business Card Reader Pro lets you import the contact information straight from those cards to your iPhone contacts without having to enter it manually. The app also has Salesforce integration (as an in-app purchase). This one costs $6.99. (iOS)
- You can also create a digital business card for yourself to share with all your networking contacts. Haystack has some of the features of Business Card Reader Pro, but it’s more focused on allowing you to create the “next generation” of business cards. Nonetheless, you can design your own digital business cards to swap with your contacts and you can also import the more traditional card stock business cards that people give you. This one’s free. (iOS, Android)
- If you want to compose an initial draft of your resume, Pocket Resume will offer you a simple template to begin assembling the information you’ll need on your smartphone. Of course, later you’ll need to get on your laptop or other device to custom tailor the resume to the various positions you’re applying for. This app costs $4.99. (iOS)
- Once you get a response from a particular company, you can visit glassdoor.com to see what it’s like to work there. Employees and former employees anonymously review the positives and negatives of working at the organization. You can get a sense of things like environment and company morale so you know what to expect in the interview. This is a free app. (iOS, Android)
Of course you could perform these activities on your laptop, but these apps offer the opportunity to do some career work when you’re out and about.
Best of Life,
Judi
